Character Information

Name: Emma Banks
Canon: Six (M.M. Vaughan)
OU/AU/CRAU/OC: OU

World info: Basically our world around the 2010s, but with at least one corporation working on much more advanced technology, including teleportation
History: After the apparent death of their mother, Emma's family, including her father and her older brother Parker, end up moving to America from England. While Emma makes friends fairly fast, Parker struggles in school, and it's not helped by their dad being secretive about his job at Avecto Enterprises. In fact, his company has discovered another potentially habitable planet, known as SIX, and has been developing teleportation technology to help settle it, funded by several wealthy patrons who wish to immigrate there. While the teleportation works fine on the first trip, so far a second trip always results in undesirable effects on living creatures. Their dad is working on fixing this, with an additional incentive being that his wife is actually alive on the other planet.

Parker does eventually make a friend at school, Michael, and he ends up inviting both siblings over to his house, where they bond and ride bikes together, although Emma is somewhat displeased at the size and extravagance of the house when there are better uses the money could be put to. Still, she likes Michael well enough. However, their dad's boss eventually gets tired of there being no visible progress, and forcefully sedates him and sends him over to the other planet. He is able to send one last message via his implant, though only her brother receives it, since Emma is in swim class at this point and doesn't have her glasses with her. Before Parker can inform her, she ends up being "picked up" by two of her dad's coworkers, who don't realize she can read lips and end up talking in front of her about how they're going to keep her locked up for a while and pretend that her dad is simply busy. She's able to inform Parker of her location well enough that Michael's chauffeur can drive by and allow her to jump into his car.

With only the names "Solomon Gladstone" and "Six" to go on, the kids then attempt to search for what's going on, and end up finding a conspiracy theorist's website that actually fully details what's going on with the planet SIX. While they don't believe it, as it's the only lead they have they attempt to get more information via a burner email. This ends up drawing the attention of Avecto, who try to lead them into an ambush, but another message from the actual website owner tips them off and they manage to escape. Said message tells them not to contact the owner again, but Parker manages to get through to them by revealing that his father was taken.

The website owner, who goes by "Anteater," tells the group to meet them at a comic convention wearing a certain set of masks. They meet up in an audience hall, where they meet Anteater, who reveals herself to be a woman. She tells them more about Solomon Gladstone, including that he's been sent to a psychiatric hospital for supposed delusions. However, before she can explain much more, several police officers end up charging in and dragging her out. A later text claiming she was released also turns out to be from someone impersonating her, and her website gets shut down a little bit later. Thus, their only recourse left is to seek out Solomon Gladstone.

With the help of Michael's hacking skills, they are able to collect a bunch of information on various psychiatric patients, and locate the place Solomon is being held at. They manage to sneak in to visit him, revealing that he has been visibly mutated due to being teleported twice after his first attempt to figure out what was going on on SIX. He explains the full plans for SIX to them, as well as the fact that their father has been smuggling him coded messages in USBs. The latest one asked Solomon to find a way to send the kids over, and so they make a plan.

In the end, Solomon decides to pose as the kids' dad, and get a friend of his to disguise all three of them. Since there are still regular trips to SIX for the wealthy, they get a friend of his to make them fake passports and tickets, and manage to get into the base and through the teleportation process. However, going through a third teleportation ends up killing Solomon, and when the people on the other end notice this they end up chasing after and catching Emma and Parker. Just as they're about to forcefully send the two kids back, their dad appears and threatens to stop working if they harm his family. Emma and Parker end up being given citizenship on SIX, and the book ends with them living in this artificial paradise, with Emma still dissatisfied about the many people who will be left behind.
Canon point: One day before her dad's abduction
Age: 10

Personality: Emma is a very friendly and empathetic girl, who befriends people easily and wants to help whoever needs it. She loves her family very much, and has at one point tried to beat up a bully who was messing with her brother. While she knows her looking out for him despite being younger is annoying to him, she still tries to protect him nonetheless. Like most younger kids, she's also very worried about upsetting her family too much, and her mood can quickly fall when she starts thinking her brother hates her.

Emma also has a strong sense of justice, and wants to see everyone in the world done right by. She has a definite distaste for people who use their wealth or power to hurt others. However, being ten, she can definitely still enjoy particular luxuries for herself, such as Michael buying her her own fancy bike. Still, she's definitely dissatisfied by everything about SIX and Avecto.

She very much doesn't think of her deafness as a flaw of hers. Despite having "telepathy," she still works to keep fluent in sign language, and has refused the use of hearing aids. However, she's good at appearing helpless when she needs to, and even fake-crying to make it even more realistic.
Character changes: Learning about the various horrible things that go on in other worlds is probably just going to enhance Emma's desire to help everyone she can. Also, I definitely intend for canon to go far, far off the rails-it's quite likely that Solomon won't have to die, or even that someone might be able to rescue Emma's parents from SIX. Or take down Avecto completely, I wouldn't complain.

Capabilities: Emma is a typical 10-year-old physically, albeit a fairly active one. She's part of a swim team, and knows some karate moves, though in an actual fight her best advantage is the element of surprise. She is Deaf from birth, and knows how to read lips. She is fluent in British Sign Language, and conversant with American Sign Language. She has an implant that allows her to communicate "telepathically" with her father and brother, though it has a range limit, and since it projects text onto her glasses she needs to be wearing them to receive messages.
